Insulation is one of those things that homeowners often think about only when there’s a problem – like a rodent infestation or a leaky ceiling. That’s because attics tend to be out of sight and out of mind unless something goes wrong, which may not be a good thing since a well-insulated attic can significantly improve home comfort, energy efficiency and reduce air conditioning costs.
Poor attic insulation is a common cause of high energy bills and uneven temperatures throughout the house. Insulation settles and compresses over time, and gaps can reduce its R-value (the higher the R-Value, the better the insulation). In addition, older homes often don’t have adequate insulation to begin with.
Proper attic insulation prevents heat from escaping the home during the winter, and it keeps cool air inside during the summer, helping to keep a more consistent temperature throughout the house. This increases comfort and lowers energy bills, and it can even help to protect the health of residents by reducing the amount of chemicals used in heating and cooling homes.
There are many types of insulation to choose from, including fiberglass batts and rolls, mineral wool, and cellulose. Fiberglass is the most common and affordable, and it comes in precut sheets that fit standard attic joists and rafters. Other options include cellulose, which is made from recycled paper and other organic materials, and loose-fill insulation, which can be made of fiberglass, mineral wool or cellulose. Spray foam insulation is another option, which expands upon application and fills gaps and cracks effectively. It can also be used to seal vents, attic hatches and openings near the attic ladder.

Weiss Distilling Co. is well known for its wine and craft beer, but it is rapidly gaining recognition for its spirits, too. The distillery industry in the state is booming, and Michigan’s spirit makers are finding ways to create unique experiences for their guests.
Detroit City Distillery is creating small batch artisanal whiskey, gin and vodka using local ingredients sourced directly from farms near their tasting room and distillery located in the historic Eastern Market. The building was once home to Goebel Brewery and later Stroh’s Ice Cream, the site that largely defined Detroit’s brewing legacy.
The distillery partners are quick to point out that their success is not solely based on the fact they make alcohol; it’s how they use their resources and knowledge to impact their community. They jumped at the opportunity to help meet the demand for hand sanitizer during the COVID-19 pandemic by quickly retooling their operation and producing massive amounts of sanitizer.
WDIV ClickOnDetroit recently visited the distillery in Clawson to check out Weiss in the Wild, a new speakeasy-style cocktail bar that is themed every few months. This summer, the theme is jungle-inspired and features a dark space with branches, monkeys, palm trees and animal noises. The drink menu includes Weiss-a-Rita, a cocktail made with Weiss Lightning whiskey, orange liqueur, simple syrup, lime and hellfire bitters, topped with chili salt and served in a tiki cup; and Grow A Girlfriend, a gin cocktail with cucumber, elderflower liqueur, honey, lemon and citric acid.

Keystone Premier Spray Foam Insulation foam is a very versatile product that is commonly used to close air leaks in attics, crawl spaces, basements, overhangs (or cantilevers), knee walls and bonus rooms. This allows us to reduce energy costs and increase your comfort while creating a custom air-tight building envelope.
The primary reason for a home’s high energy bills is due to air leakage, which causes heat to escape from the house during heating months and vice versa in cooling months. This occurs around penetrations such as plumbing, electrical wiring and ductwork. Spray foam insulation acts as both insulation and an air seal, closing these nooks and crannies, and dramatically increasing the R-value of your home.
In addition, spray foam insulation helps prevent moisture condensation in attics and crawl spaces, preventing mold growth in these areas. This will save you thousands in the long run from costly repairs to drywall and wood framing.
Using a low-VOC spray foam, we can offer you an even better option that is safe for your family and the environment. This type of spray foam has minimal off-gassing, allowing for re-occupancy in as little as 24 hours after installation.

This trendy, speakeasy-style cocktail bar and distillery is a gathering place for the revolutionaries who are rewriting the history of our great city and the people who support them.
Co-owner J.P. Jerome credits his strong bonds with his seven business partners as one of the primary reasons for their success. All of the men have been friends since childhood and he says that their common bond has been key to their ability to work together as a team.
